The Six Verses of Liberation

Written by Adi Shankaracharya when asked “Who are you?” by his guru Govindapada — these six verses dissolve the ego into its infinite source.

Having spent a decade practicing and being certified in various healing modalities – when I refer to a clearing – it means a combination of various healing modalities – in effect clearing blocks to help someone fulfil their intention.

I continue to learn, and the more I learn, I realise how little I know.

✦   Verse I   ✦

Mano Buddhi Ahankara Chitta Ninaham
Nacha Shrotra Jihve Na Cha Ghrana Netre
Nacha Vyoma Bhoomir Na Tejo Na Vayu
Chidananda Rupa Shivoham Shivoham

I am not the mind, intellect, ego, or memory.
I am not the ears, tongue, nose, or eyes.
I am not the sky, earth, fire, or air. I am the form of consciousness and bliss — I am Shiva.

✦   Verse II   ✦

Na Cha Prana Samjno Na Vai Pancha Vayu
Na Va Sapta Dhatur Na Va Pancha Koshah
Na Vak Pani Padau Na Chopastha Payu
Chidananda Rupa Shivoham Shivoham

I am not the life-force, nor the five vital airs.
I am not the seven elements, nor the five sheaths.
I am not speech, hands, feet, or organs of action. I am the form of consciousness and bliss — I am Shiva.

✦   Verse III   ✦

Na Me Dvesha Ragau Na Me Lobha Mohau
Mado Naiva Me Naiva Matsarya Bhavah
Na Dharmo Na Chartho Na Kamo Na Mokshah
Chidananda Rupa Shivoham Shivoham

I have no hatred or passion, greed or delusion.
I have no pride, no jealousy.
I seek neither righteousness, wealth, desire, nor liberation. I am the form of consciousness and bliss — I am Shiva.

✦   Verse IV   ✦
Na Punyam Na Papam Na Saukhyam Na Duhkham
Na Mantro Na Tirtham Na Veda Na Yajnah
Aham Bhojanam Naiva Bhojyam Na Bhokta
Chidananda Rupa Shivoham Shivoham

I have no merit or sin, no joy or sorrow.
I need no mantra, pilgrimage, scripture, or ritual.
I am neither the experience, the experienced, nor the experiencer. I am the form of consciousness and bliss — I am Shiva.

✦   Verse V   ✦

I have no fear of death, no caste or creed.
I have no father, no mother, no birth.

✦   Verse VI   ✦
Aham Nirvikalpo Nirakara Rupo
Vibhutvaccha Sarvatra Sarvendriynam
Na Cha Sangatham Naiva Muktir Na Meyah
Chidananda Rupa Shivoham Shivoham

I am without thought, without form.
I pervade all, present in all senses everywhere.
I am neither attached, nor liberated, nor a mere object of knowledge. I am the form of consciousness and bliss — I am Shiva.
